What Strobeon processes, and what it never does
Version of . This page is written to be read, not to be scrolled past. The short version: the microphone and the camera stay on your phone, the pairing service only carries the state of the picture between your own devices, and there are no cookies, no trackers and no accounts.
Who is responsible
Strobeon is made by Pieter van Berkel in Delft, the Netherlands. For anything about this page, write to [email protected]. Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) that makes him the controller for the processing described here.
The microphone and the camera
Strobeon asks for the microphone because it listens to the room to find the beat and the energy in the bass, mid and high bands. This analysis happens on your device, inside the browser. The audio is not recorded, not stored and not sent anywhere. The same applies to the camera layer: it turns the picture into outlines, heat or movement on the device, and the video itself is never shown on the wall, stored or uploaded. Closing the layer releases the camera at once.
On a computer you can choose to take the sound from the computer itself (a "share audio" screen share in Chrome or Edge) instead of a microphone. That audio is treated exactly the same way and is dropped when the share ends.
The one exception is deliberate and yours: if you turn on Clips with sound, the app records short videos of the wall, with the microphone track, to your own phone. Those clips stay on the phone until you share or delete them.
Music files and Studio videos
A track you play through PLAY A TRACK, or pick in Studio, is read and analysed inside the browser on your device. It is not uploaded. Studio draws the video or still on your device as well, and the file it makes is saved where you choose. Nothing about the track or the video reaches us.
What stays on your device
Your settings, saved looks, a logo you upload, a 3D object you upload, recorded clips, Studio projects (which hold a copy of the track you saved with them) and your licence key live in the browser's own storage on that device (localStorage and IndexedDB). They are not synchronised anywhere. Clearing the site's data in the browser removes them.
The pairing service
To put the picture on a TV or projector on another device, the phone and the screen meet in a "room" on a small service run for Strobeon on Cloudflare Workers. The service processes:
- a short room code, generated by the screen, valid while the room is open;
- connection set-up messages, so the two devices can talk to each other directly (WebRTC). When a network prevents a direct link, the service relays the traffic instead;
- the picture's state: which look is on, effect values, tempo and band levels, a few kilobytes a frame. Not audio, not video, not the camera. A logo or an uploaded 3D object the phone has is sent to the screen through the same channel so the screen can draw it;
- with Crowd sync on (Venues): guest phones that scan the code join the room and send votes and short lines of text (up to 80 characters), which the host approves before they reach the wall;
- with Beat snapshot (Venues): a still of the wall's picture, as a small JPEG, kept for at most 24 hours so guests can fetch it by QR code, then deleted.
Rooms and their messages are not kept after the room closes. Like any service on the internet, Cloudflare sees the IP address of each device that connects and keeps its own short-lived operational logs. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in running the feature you asked for by pairing a screen.
Hosting
The app is served from Vercel, and this site from its own host. Serving a page means the host sees your IP address, browser type and the page requested, in standard server logs kept for a short period for security and reliability. We do not add analytics, advertising scripts, fonts from third parties or any other third-party request to the pages.
Cookies
None. Neither the app nor this site sets cookies, and nothing on them needs consent under the Dutch Telecommunicatiewet. Browser storage is used only for the settings listed above, which are necessary for the app to work as you set it up.
Buying Pro, Studio, Venues or an Event pass
A purchase goes through Stripe, who handles your payment details under their own privacy policy; we never see your card. From Stripe we receive the order reference, what was bought, and the email address to send your licence key to. The key is mailed through Resend, an email delivery service that sends it on our behalf and so receives that address and the message. For Studio and Venues, Stripe also keeps the subscription so it can renew and be cancelled. We keep the purchase record for as long as tax law requires (seven years in the Netherlands). The key itself is a signed token that says which tier you bought and until when. It contains no personal data and is checked on your device, without contacting us. In the app-store versions, the purchase and the receipt are handled by Apple or Google and we receive no personal data at all.
Your rights
You can ask what we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, object to processing based on legitimate interest, and ask for a copy in a portable form. In practice the only thing we are likely to hold is a purchase record. Write to [email protected]. You can also complain to the Dutch supervisory authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.
Changes
When this page changes, the date at the top changes with it, and a change that matters to you will be announced in the app before it applies.
